2014 is going to be a big year for Taking Off the Taboo!
There is a lot of ground to cover to make the $25000 goal for the CMHA, but I'm determined to do my utmost to meet it! At the very least, to get more conversation going on the subject of mental health stigma.
The big news, in case you missed it, is that the final event for Taking off the Taboo is already shaping up to be a big success. Mark Thursday, October 16th at 8pm in your calendars, as it's going to be an evening of music, mingling, and fund-raising for the CMHA at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto. I'm so excited to be working with Managing Matters, and Sherpa Creative who are donating their time to make this event amazing. Stay tuned for details on the evening's line up and the fantastic prizes to be bid on. I've even to join the 21st century and start a Twitter account for the event, so keep an eye out for @takeoffthetaboo and follow it for updates!
Also to come, a poker tournament in March, another Thrill of a Lifetime racing school raffle in the spring, and plans are being made for a Yoga workshop in the summer, and a sporting event of some kind (dodgeball, anyone? Fun run/walk, maybe?) in the fall. Again, keep up to date with the facebook page for more details. I know there's danger of donor fatigue, but there should be something in all of this to appeal to everyone!
I'm also making some changes to the Taking off the Taboo facebook page. The site has been consistently running mental health articles of interest, as well as informative research-based presentations and talks, but starting this week, I'm also launching Mental Health Mondays. The idea behind this is to share creative mental health initiatives, community events, techniques for boosting mental health, and other positive stories. Feel free to share yours or pass along ideas you think others would like to see!
On that note, some shameless site-promotion - please take the time to "like" the facebook page if you haven't already done so. Share the site, and spread the word. Mental health issues affect everyone - the only way to stop the stigma surrounding them is to include it in our conversations as we would any other illness. The goal for Taking Off the Taboo is to raise money for the CMHA, yes, but more importantly to raise awareness. It may seem trivial, but in this day and age where social media is ever-present, something as simple as "liking" a page does actually matter. Help expand the reach of this important cause!
That's about it for now, but stay tuned for monthly progress updates! As always, you can make a tax-deductible donation at any time to the CMHA by clicking the link below.
